Student Life

Overview

At Holy Name of Jesus Catholic School, student life is centered on faith, community, and personal growth. From daily prayer and weekly Mass to enriching extracurriculars and service opportunities, students are encouraged to live out the Gospel in every part of their day. Whether they’re collaborating on a science project, performing in a school play, leading a service drive, or cheering on classmates at a game, students experience a vibrant and supportive environment that nurtures their hearts, minds, and spirits. Here, faith and friendship go hand in hand—helping every student grow into the person God created them to be.

Extra Curricular Activities

In addition to core academics, Holy Name of Jesus Catholic School offers a variety of special programs that enrich every student’s learning experience.

Athletics

Athletics at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic School encourage teamwork, perseverance, and healthy living in a faith-based environment. Our teams compete in the South Suburban Youth Organization (SSYO) league in the following activities:

  • Grade 3 – Volleyball skills program

  • Grade 4 – 6 girls, volleyball/soccer, basketball, ultimate frisbee

  • Grade 4 – 6 boys, soccer, basketball, ultimate frisbee

Band

Band gives students the opportunity to explore music, build discipline, and perform with confidence.

Beginning Band: Open to all beginners in grades 4–6.

Advanced Band: For students in grades 5 and 6 who have reached a higher level of proficiency.

Both bands perform at the Christmas and Spring concerts. Students also have the opportunity to prepare a small group piece with a few of their classmates for these concerts if they so choose.

Band lessons are provided weekly in small groups during the school day. Band is a graded, academic subject at Holy Name of Jesus School.

Catholic Math League

Catholic Math League challenges students to sharpen problem-solving skills and achieve personal and team goals in a supportive environment.

Catholic Math League is a national math competition founded in 1997 as a division of Educontest. It is used by hundreds of Catholic schools nationwide to help students develop strong mathematical skills.

Our Math Specialist, Lenise, leads the Catholic Math League program for grades 3–6. About 70 students from these grades participate annually, and Holy Name of Jesus Catholic School regularly has students who place highly in both the school’s division and in national rankings.

Catholic Math League includes both individual and team competitions, and Holy Name of Jesus Catholic School has competed since 2013.

Choir

HNOJ students in grades 3-6 are invited to serve their parish and school community through singing in our Student Mass Choir. This is an opportunity to serve and worship God while simultaneously growing in musical skills.

Our choir is split into two groups: 3rd Grade Choir and Schola Choir (grades 4-6). The groups alternate weeks, practicing after school on Tuesday and singing for school Mass on Wednesday morning. Therefore, the commitment is every other week. Please contact our director, Katie Coyle, for more information.
